NBI’s suspect ‘a surprise’ to city police
SECURITY guard Nemuel Sumabong’s name didn’t turn up in the Cebu City police’s investigation on the fatal shooting of lawyer Richard Sison, an official said yesterday.
Still, Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Patrocinio Comendador said he respected the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) theory and will make sure the police force continues to play “a complementary role” in the investigation and prosecution of the case.
Arrested 20 days after the attack, Sumabong reportedly resembles a sketch prepared by the NBI, but not that of the police.
Comendador said his office is ready to provide physical evidence, if needed, to the NBI. The CCPO has been checking with Sison’s law firm on the cases the victim handled, in search of leads about the motive and perpetrators.
Sumabong’s name didn’t surface, whether as complainant or defendant, in the cases Sison handled, he added.
Comendador said the NBI’s witnesses were the same witnesses who helped the city police in its investigation.
The NBI confirmed yesterday, however, that three of its witnesses identified Sumabong as the gunman.
Despite the arrest, Comendador said, Task Force Sison will continue with its investigation, given that they have not yet figured out the motive for the killing.
Other suspects also remain at large.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña assured Sison’s family yesterday of the City’s help—including a possible reward for the arrest of other suspects, in case the Lapu-Lapu City Government doesn’t give any.
After arresting Sumabong in Barangay Camputhaw, Cebu City last Tuesday, the NBI headed for Bogo City in northern Cebu but failed to find any of the alleged cohorts. (JST/With JECT of Superbalita)
