Red men
By Clint Holton P. Potestas

RED, according to international fashion designer Tom Ford, is a statement in itself: it may mean lesser clothes.

“When men wear red, that’s it. No need to add more frills. The color is sophisticated without going over the top,” Ford says
in his E! News interview with Juliana Rancic.

We pick up Ford’s idea for Father’s Day. Red shirts accented with the basic jacket and jeans are the staple of the season.
We’ve prepared tips from stylists on the latest trends for both father and son.

1. Cool confidence. For fashion correspondent Maggie Kalogeropoulos, the character should be the best fashion statement. She says: “The No. 1 fashion rule is about having confidence in your look. You should look in the mirror and accept, like and appreciate what you see.

“Yes, there are tips you should follow, but for the most part fashion is about your confidence and look. Be the clothes; don’t let the clothes be you.”

2. Red is beautiful. How to wear red without flamboyance? Tame its color with neutral tops and pants. Red is best paired with brown, khaki, gray or white.

For Allan Jalen, fashion designer: “You can dress for the season. Red is universal, and it all depends on how you pull it off with the rest of your look. If you’re a tall guy, I don’t think the way you dress can be confined, but there are subtle ways to wear all the looks. There are ways to wear colors.”

3. Prep up. If you’re defined by the preppy look of the season, head for argyle sweaters, polo shirts, and tweeds.

Farah Averill, fashion writer, shares: “For those of you who identify with this style but have a bit of a rebellious streak, try mixing prints and patterns in the same outfit when you want to funk things up a bit — just make sure everything is in the same color family or you’ll seem horribly disorganized.”

4. Class act. Staying on the safe side, like wearing your classic tuxedo, can be too boring. Fashion should be a story of hits and misses.

Here’s the deal from Averill: “The best thing about adhering to this style is that, while you’re probably willing to do some short-term damage to your bank account by splurging on items like cashmere sweaters, you know that you’ll still be wearing these items 10 years from now.”

5. Pop out. Pop stars look this way: Whatever is about to blow up — whether last fall’s voluminous togs (the Blow Up) or next season’s eye-popping styles — they try it. And they’re called trend-setting. But age does matter, boys.

“A few rules to keep in mind in order to always look enviably good: If you wore it the first time around, you probably shouldn’t wear it again; and, the older you are, the more you should stick to wearing only one or two standout pieces per outfit,” says Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley.
