Monday, June 16, 2008 Defending champion loses elementary crown
DEFENDING elementary division champion Adrian Bedua won’t have the chance to join the other pool legends after he lost his shot to defend his crown in the first day of the 1st Senate President Manny Villar Cup-Sun.Star Superbalita 9-Ball Challenge at the SM City Cebu.
Adrian Bedua was overthrown by Joshua Ababon, 5-2, in the semifinals yesterday.
Both players were evenly matched at first but Ababon rallied for the victory and got his ticket to the finals against Jerson Cumayas.
Cumayas crushed Harley Gonzales, 5-1, in their semifinal match and he and Ababon will fight for the crown with the finalists of the other divisions on June 22.
Bedua had a chance to redeem himself to take home third place but instead, the 2007 Sun.Star Superbalita 9-Ball Challenge champion went home empty handed after he was whitewashed by Gonzales in a lopsided match, 5-1.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, Bedua advanced to the top four by winning against his nemesis and last year’s runnerup Mark John Dingson, 5-1, in a rematch of last year’s championship.
Meanwhile, in the high school division Mhar Sagarino defeated Gerwin Bathan; Jepoy Cañete was victorious against Robert Johnson Nocos; Jeffrey Potanak triumphed over Joed Puesca; Jhun Rey Gabunada succeeded against Reynold Arias; Allan Milan Jr. prevailed against Ram Lalwani; Cyril Gauste beat Jonico Jacob Romblon; Lee Van Labajo overpowered Alfie Montano.
