Barrita: My way
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

A man shot and killed his cousin in a Mandaue City videoke bar after the latter refused to yield the mike and kept him from singing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.”

He wasn’t even given a choice.

He could have pointed the gun at his cousin and demanded, “mike or life?”

No one knows how a song that begins with, “And now, the end is near,” can provoke homicidal rage in some people who are often laced with alcohol.

But there seems to be equality among cousins in violence over “My Way.”

Here, a man can equally kill his cousin or other people’s cousins.

And it matters not whether you sing the song off-key or sing it well – it can cost your life.

***

"My Way" was found to be the song most frequently played at British funeral services.

The former Serbian president charged with war crimes, Slobodan Miloševic, was said to be a huge fan of the song, which he would play repeatedly in his prison cell in The Hague during his trial for crimes against humanity.

He died during trial.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye ended his six-year stint as press secretary by joking with the Malacañang Press Corps and singing his own version of “My Way.”

He’ll soon assume his new post as member of Bangko Sentral’s Monetary Board.

Reports said he was laughing and singing on his way to the bank.

***

Secretary Cerge Remonde of the Presidential Management Staff said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s policy to subsidize rice, power and soon, fuel, will continue as long as there are funds in the national coffers.

The latest is a P1-billion interest-free fund for conversion of buses and jeepneys to cheaper fuel.

So, enjoy while the funds last.

Same-sex unions have gained recognition in many countries and some states in the US, among them the most populous
state of California.

That’s right, it’s now legal in such countries as The Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Spain, Britain, France, Norway and South Africa.

I hope they won’t make it compulsory.
