Lapu names new building after murdered lawyer

THE Lapu-Lapu City Police Office received yesterday from the City Government a two-story building worth over P3 million and will house its Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) office.

The building, named after murdered lawyer Richard Sison, was turned over yesterday in a simple ceremony led by Mayor Arturo Radaza and Acting City Police Director Louie Oppus.

The turnover, which was preceded by a mass in Sison’s grave in Sitio Humay-Humay, Barangay Gun-ob cemetery, coincided with the slain lawyer’s 53rd birthday.

The building’s construction on the City-owned lot near the City Hall building was completed three years ago, but has not been used for lack of fixtures, including air conditioning units.

Support

Radaza, a former policeman, said allowing Swat to have its own building is a manifestation of his unending support to the police force.

Late last year, he approved the allocation of P1.3 million for the construction of a two-story police station in Barangay Poblacion, but the soaring prices of construction materials stalled its implementation.

Radaza said he and the City Council agreed to name the Swat building after Sison as a gratitude for the fallen lawyer’s help to the City by untiringly defending his administration from graft charges filed by different individuals, including Mactan Island Chamber of Commerce, Inc. president Efrain Pelaez, Jr.

Sison, who was City Hall’s legal consultant and family lawyer of the Radazas, was shot dead in Cebu City last May 21.

Though the alleged gunman, Nemuel Sumabong, has already been arrested, the motive and the mastermind of the killing still have to be determined. (AIV)
