TOWNS in Cebu Province will each receive four sacks filled with camote (sweet potato) cuttings to sustain their “Sinanduloy sa Kabusog, Sinanduloy sa Kahimsog” (Saksak) program.
Cebu Provincial Agriculturist Necias Vicoy said the municipalities can claim their free cuttings from the Capitol.
“Although sometimes, depending where we are traveling, we can also deliver the sacks to the municipalities,” said Vicoy.
Vicoy said that the sweet potato would only take about a month to grow, but bigger sweet potatoes take about three months until they’re ready for harvest.
“We have already started the distribution in June, so we can expect harvest in August,” he said.
Vicoy said the Capitol will be receiving more camote cuttings from the Visayas State College of Agriculture within next week. “We will also distribute these cuttings to the municipalities,” he said.
Earlier this year, the Provincial Government launched their Saksak program to increase crop harvest, provide nutritious food to every household and make full use of underutilized land.
Saksak, a Cebuano word that roughly translates into “mix”, is a combination of cooked rice and sweet potatoes. (EPB)
