Serna: Chatting with Jewel

ALLOW me to congratulate Alibyo Boutique Spa therapist Emmanuel Flores for running home with the title Male Grand Winner in the Endless Wet Summer tilt held at the Mango Square parking area last Saturday.

He bested nine other contestants who were equally good-looking and buffed. Emman, was prodded and supported by Alibyo proprietor Johnie Lim who felt so happy at his ward’s victory that he immediately gave him a blowout that night at the K1 Family KTV.

At the bar, Emman showed that he not only possesses a well-toned body but also a good singing voice. Of course, the others also showed the winner that he had stiff competition in the singing department.

In the same breadth, let me also congratulate Fil-German Siegfred Schmidt for winning the Ginoong Ormoc 2008 title recently. GMA 7 Cebu’s Yuri relayed this development to me.

Yuri sat as one of the distinguished judges in that personality contest. Siegfred, a veteran of sorts in tilts like this, also joined the Mr. Ticao Island Tourism 2008 tilt held in Masbate last April 28 where he was voted Mr. Photogenic and Mr. Placenta Face.

The recent and successful concert of the popular ‘80s duo Air Supply at the Pacific grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel should be a learning experience for both show organizers and concertgoers alike.

Several past concerts had been started one hour late. It has become an unwritten rule of sorts and, consequently, concert goers expect this to happen every time a show is mounted anywhere in Cebu.

That show proved to be an exception. Although it did not really start on the hour stated on the tickets, the show started much earlier than expected. “We start on time,” as vocalist Russell Hitchcock said.

When the artists noticed that there were vacant seats near the stage, they urged the audience to move closer. The expectant crowd gladly obliged and to the chagrin of those who paid for those more expensive seats but came in late.

They argued with those who occupied their assigned seats but the occupants would not budge a bit (thanks to the dramatic entrance of the late-comers and the invitation of the artists). Both parties were right in claiming the right to the seats but what can the “poor” organizers do?

Lesson: organizers of future shows should stick to the original schedule and teach the Cebuano concert goers that punctuality is still a virtue these days. Bow!

Despite the apparent senior citizenships, Air Supply main vocalist Russel Hitchcock still can reach those high notes that characterized most, if not all, of their blockbuster hits but now lacks the energy and stamina to sustain them.

Although I liked their hits like Making Love Out of Nothing at All, The One That You Love and others, my favorite is still their own version of The Power of Love, which was equally lapped up by the crowd. They obviously enjoyed the trek down memory lane.

Former Starstruck survivor Jewel Mische had an informal chat with some Cebu entertainment scribes last Saturday over sumptuous lunch at the Lighthouse Restaurant along Gen. Maxilom Ave. courtesy of Rosemarie Gaisano.

The multi-talented young star (she’s a music junior in University of the Philippines, writes songs and plays the piano and guitar) is the eldest of the five children of a Filipina mom and a German dad.

Her pairing off with Richard Gutierrez in the recently concluded teleseries Kamandag gave rise to speculations that the two are playing sweet music together, which Jewel denies with a mischievous sweet smile.

The two would have been seen next in the movie Dagaw had it not been shelved for one reason or another. Jewel, though, hopes the project will still be finished in due time, if ever.

For her June 29 debut, GMA 7 is cooking up a project which will reveal an activity. The young star is exerting so much effort to keep it under wraps, even to her family and friends, until the documentary type special will be aired.

Jewel divulged this activity to us but we promised her we won’t reveal it prematurely. Ms. Gaisano assured Jewel that the media members she invited have word of honor.

We nodded in agreement (of course!).
