A WOMAN and her son-in-law were shot dead after they tried to settle their differences with some people they got into an argument with over the weekend.
Victoriana Empis died at the South General Hospital while her daughter’s husband, Jaime Imbodo Fuentes, died on the spot after two men on a motorcycle shot them in Barangay Cantangcas, in Dumanjug, Cebu Wednesday afternoon.
Empis was shot on her forehead after she tried to stop the two men from hurting Fuentes.
Fuentes reportedly got into trouble last Sunday after he allegedly shot Bernardo Pescolante III, 35.
Complaint
SPO1 Julianito Mole-jon of the Dumanjug Police Station said Pescolante filed a complaint against Fuentes and alleged that Empis shot him.
The argument reportedly began when Fuentes fired a gun in Barangay Pawa. Pescolante reportedly called his attention and told him not to do it because it scared the residents, especially a woman who had just given birth.
This reportedly angered Fuentes, who aimed at Pescolante. Pescolante showed police his T-shirt that had a hole in it, saying, however, that the bullet did not pierce his skin.
Last Wednesday, Fuen-tes and Empis, along with Empis’ husband, proceeded to Barangay Pawa from Barangay Cogon to try and settle the matter so that it would not reach the courts.
Too tense
Empis and her husband boarded a motorcycle and proceeded to Barangay Pawa first while Fuentes followed minutes later.
However, the Empis couple decided to go back because they felt that the situation was too tense and that the residents in Barangay Pawa were reportedly still angry.
When they went back, they ran into Fuentes.
In the middle of the road, they stopped as the Empis couple told him not to proceed to the area because the residents were still angry with him.
As they discussed what to do, two men on a motorcycle passed by but then made a u-turn to where they were.
Empis saw one of them pull out a gun.
Not home
She tried to stop him from heading towards Fuentes, but the man shot her in the forehead. He then shot Fuentes several times. Fuentes had five gunshot wounds in the chest and head.
The two men then fled aboard their Honda XRM motorcycle.
Molejon said that when they went to check on Pescolante to ask him questions, he was no longer home Wednesday night.
Molejon said that this did not mean that Pescolante was already a suspect, only that he disappeared before they could ask him questions pertaining to the incident.
Witnesses said the men were not wearing any helmets or masks to conceal their faces, but they were not familiar.
Molejon also said they had yet to talk to Empis’ husband as he was still trying to settle his hospital bill.
Fuentes worked as a watchman for the Dumanjug Municipal Hall. (MEA)
