Student gets life term for selling illegal drugs

A FEMALE student was sentenced to life in jail after the Regional Trial Court (RTC) found her guilty of selling illegal drugs. Her companion, however, was acquitted of the same charge.

Jenevieve Juezan, 29, was also ordered to pay half a million pesos as fine. But the court didn’t find enough evidence to convict Joshua Famador, 31.

Juezan and Famador were arrested in a buy-bust operation on Sept. 12, 2005, on Katipunan St., A. Lopez, Cebu City. The drugs sold weighed a total of 32.55 grams.

PO2s George Cansancio and Inocentes Amistad testified that after a three-day surveillance, a buy-bust was conducted against Juezan. Cansancio acted as poseur buyer. He bought the shabu from Juezan, who was riding a motorcycle driven by Famador.

Arrest

After the sale was consummated, Cansancio gave his fellow policemen the signal to arrest the two.

Juezan and Famador denied the charges. Famador said he was only conducting a road test of Juezan’s newly repaired motorcycle when the cops arrested him. Juezan said she was only out to buy medicines.

Both also claimed that immediately after their arrest, the police officers wanted to ask a “gift” from them. They should either cough up names of other drug pushers or pay P200,000.

But RTC Judge Gabriel Ingles found the testimonies of Cansancio and Amistad to be strong enough to convict Juezan of violation of section 5 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (Republic Act 9165).

Ingles, however, ruled that “it is not clear what the participation of accused Famador is in the supposed sale.” (JGA)
