Mandaue JCI claims 5th straight victory

MANDAUE Jaycees of Joey Cal nipped Cebu Dentcraft , 110-109, Tuesday night at the City Sports Club Cebu gym, to sweep all of its elimination round assignments in the Jaycees Basketball Association (JBA) President’s Cup 2008 basketball tournament.

Mandaue Jaycees now sports a 5-0 record to be at the top of the competition’s standing.

Both camps engaged in a neck-to-neck battle that featured several deadlocks and lead changes, making it one of the closest matches of the tourney.

The triumvirate of Nestor Patindol, Ritchie Garcia and Joshua Lerio, who displayed the needed firepower in the final minute that led to Mandaue Jaycees’ win.

Cebu Dentcraft had a final attempt at the victory when Boy Te had the chance to fire the final basket with 2.2 seconds left, but failed to convert as he could not squeeze
past Mandaue Jaycees’ defenders.

Mandaue played with just eight players and all of them made huge contribution as they finished in double figures each. Leading the scorers were Nestor Patindol, high-leaping Richie Garcia, Joshua Lerio and Edgar Colina.

Peter Sta. Maria and James Loyd Noel paced the losing team with 34 and 26 points, respectively, while Joseph Jayme and Te combined for 35 points.

In the other game, the younger Landview Property five whipped the winless Purcia Transport System, Inc. in a lopsided 88-59 win.

Landview squad continued to pounce on the hapless Purcia Transport in the final half to post a commanding, 66-46 going into the final period.

Pocholo Lao and Kent Ang spearheaded Landview Property with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Also finishing with double-digits each were Dominic Hing, Oliver Go and Michael Hing.


Baltaire Balangauan led the scorers for the losing side with 19 points, while Chito Hernandez and Jay-R Purcia combined for 24 points.

Team rankings after the elimination round showed Mandaue JCI on top (5-0), RC Goldline (4-l), Cebu Dentcraft (2-3), Versacool (2-3), Landview Property (2-3) and Purcia Transport (0-5). (PR)
