Serna: Rediscovering Vandross
By Roger Serna
Sounds and images

I ALREADY heard the song Dance With My Father but never quite paid enough attention to its beauty then. If I’m not mistaken, it’s in the last album recorded by Luther Vandross before he responded to the call of the Creator.

It was during the first gala performance of Pinoy Dream Academy last Saturday where scholar Liezl performed Dance With My Father so well that I took notice of the song’s poetic and musical splendor. Of course, Liezl’s vocal quality helped a lot.

Now, I’m scouring on my CD collection to find out if I had that particular album in it.

In a brief footage I caught last weekend, I saw Sarah Geronimo having a hard time delivering the lines of a song with John Lloyd teasing her every now and then.

I’m not quite sure what caused her to giggle that much. Could it be an incident with the actor that she cherished and caused her to lose her poise?

Incidentally, the song she performed is also the title of Sarah and John Lloyd’s first team-up. A Very Special Love, from Star Cinema, will be shown in movie houses simultaneously nationwide on July 30.

Let me add that Sarah’s version of the haunting love song is a better rendition than the immediate revival version of another popular Filipino chanteuse. That’s my own judgment.

While John Lloyd has A Very Special Love as his next major project, Bea Alonzo, the other half of the duo that won the box office king and queen title recently, will also have her hands full with the Filipino version of the popular series Betty La Fea.

John Lloyd is said to be one of those considered to play the male lead. Before Bea’s schedule gets so hectic, though, she’ll be flying to Cebu on Saturday, July 5, to guest in the next raffle draw of Gaisano Main and Country Mall’s Shop for a Scholarship Promo.

This time, the celebrity performance will only be at the Country Mall at 7 p.m. Take note!

The recent Kapusolympics Watermania, held in line with GMA 7’s 58th anniversary and which was televised last weekend, was an enjoyable fare. For one, it gathered most, if not all, of the network’s contract artists.

Regive Velasquez looked resplendent in her gown as she opened the show.

Curvaceous and well-toned bodies were an ordinary vision during the event.

Richard Gomez, Joey Marquez, Paolo Paraiso, Wendell Ramos, Marco Alcaraz and Pekto led the different teams.

The water games were enjoyable to watch though sometimes risky on the part of the participants. I heard there were participants who were injured. I was not able to finish the show as I succumbed to the temptation to drift off to dreamland.

Surprisingly, nobody in the show figured in my dreams that night. Paet!

Despite the incessant rain and the intermittent wind that blew from different directions, the invitation from Body and Sole’s and Alibyo’s Johnie Lim pushed through. It was to try the food in one of the establishments in the newly opened The Walk at Asiatown – IT Park.

The inclement weather notwithstanding, people flocked to the place thereby giving us a hard time to find a parking area.

Never did we imagine that the weather disturbance would soon find families losing loved ones, properties and other valuables.

Typhoon Frank has earned itself a record place as the first howler with a male name alongside female-named howlers that wrought great havoc in this part of the globe.

One of the “casualties” of typhoon Frank was the songwriting workshop for children scheduled last weekend at the Intosan Resort in Danao City. When everything was already in place and some participants had already gone to Danao, the Prov’l. Council for the Welfare of Children received notice that the venue has no power and water.

“We can’t do anything” was what all the council members can say. Who can go against Mother Nature, anyway?

Tomorrow, the workshop will finally push through in the same venue. Let’s cross our fingers.
