8 barangays declared under state of calamity

THE Talisay City Government has declared at least eight barangays under the state of calamity and earmarked P800,000 as financial aid to typhoon victims.

On mass motion, the City Council approved in its regular session last Tuesday the amount chargeable against the local calamity funds.

Placed under the state of calamity were the coastal areas of Tanke, San Roque, Pooc, Dumlog, Poblacion, Cansojong, Lawaan III and the hilly village of Manipis.

The City Social Welfare Office (CSWO) reported that almost 2,000 families in the city’s coastal barangays were adversely affected when typhoon Frank hit Cebu over the weekend.

Gigantic waves, spawned by powerful winds, whacked their houses, mostly made of light materials, along the city’s shorelines, forcing residents to take shelter at barangay halls and sports centers.

Councilor Shirley Belleza, the majority floor leader, said that families whose houses were destroyed by the storm will receive P3,000 each.

CSWO Head Felipa Solana said that some of the affected families, who sustained huge damage on their houses, will get P5,000.

The rest, whose houses were partially damaged by the storm, will also get monetary aid depending on City Hall’s actual assessment.

Belleza said Barangay Manipis was included because of landslides that occurred in the area at the height of the storm.

Apart from landslides, a portion of a four-meter riprap wall caved in inside the campus of the Manipis Elementary School.

Part of the calamity funds will also be used to repair a portion of the Barangay Hall in Lawaan 3, which was destroyed by a fallen Sambag tree.

As of yesterday, City Hall was still processing the documents for the release of the calamity funds.

Solana was confident, though, that it would be given to the affected families early next week. (GC)
