Sunday, June 30, 2008 MCWD ties up with Aussie firm to cut wastage
IN line with its objective to deliver quality water to more Cebuanos, the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) is partnering with Australian utility, City West Water.
Out of the partnership, Cebu expects to target its non-revenue water losses that stem from leaks, pilferage and meter inaccuracies.
City West Water also plans to help MCWD improve its distribution system to achieve better pressures and ensure continuous supply using a technique called hydraulic modeling.
MCWD General Manager Armando Paredes on signing the twinning agreement and detailed work plan welcomed the help from City West Water.
Although MCWD is among the better performing water districts in the country, Paredes said there is always room to do better.
“City West has water losses well below those of ours and if we can reach their level, we will have more water available for our customers,” he said.
The agreement takes effect next month and will involve knowledge exchange visits between the utilities as well as on site mentoring by City West Water on leak detection and training on hydraulic modeling.
This deal is one of only two put together for Philippine utilities—the other is for Davao. Five more water districts in the country will be sponsored by Asian Development Bank as part of its drive to boost water coverage and quality in the context of United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.
