Langub folk ask for bridge

RESIDENTS in Sitio Langub, barangay Kalu-nasan, Cebu City have replaced yesterday their makeshift bridge for the sixth time after floodwaters washed away their concrete footbridge last year.

They are wondering when the City Government would take notice of their plight.

“Kanus-a man mi taga-an sa City og insakto nga taytayan. Maghulat pa ba ta nga dunay mahitabo? (When will the City build a bridge? Do we have to wait for a tragedy to happen?)” said resident Janet Calleno.

The concrete footbridge in Langub was destroyed in September last year, forcing school children to wade across the river.

Calleno said that since that incident, their makeshift bridge has been replaced six times because raging waters always destroyed it.

And the one they built yesterday is unreliable and dangerous because bamboo poles become slippery when they are wet, and it is just barely over two feet above the water.

She said they followed things up with the officials of Guadalupe and Kalu-nasan last January since the footbridge connects the two barangays.

She was allegedly told by Barangay Captain Eugenio Faelnar that the footbridge would be built last February.

Negotiate

She went to see Ka-lunasan officials and was informed that the matter was already being taken cared of by City Councilor Gerardo Carillo’s office, which is still negotiating with a lot owner.

Carillo said yesterday that he still has to verify the report that the makeshift bridge was washed away.

He said the City has already allocated funds for the construction of a concrete footbridge.

Carillo proposed a resolution last April 9 charging to the 2008 calamity funds P921,003.20 for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the footbridge.

But the measure was initially deferred but the City Council later approved the request.

Also, Saturday night’s rain caused a landslide in El Graje, Barangay Busay, partially blocking off a portion of a road.

Carillo said the City will send heavy equipment to clear the area today. (RHM)
