Talisay plans P5T each cash aid

THE Talisay City Council finally approved yesterday a resolution requesting Mayor Socrates Fernandez to provide financial aid to Talisay residents whose relatives have either died or survived in the mv Princess of the Stars tragedy.

Councilor Rodi Cabigas, the proponent, is asking the City Government to give at least P5,000 monetary assistance for each family of the Talisaynons who boarded the Sulpicio Lines Inc.-owned vessel.

“The Local Government of Talisay should by all means provide available assistance thereof to the victims and families of the said tragedy including financial assistance,” his resolution read.

Assistance center

The City Social Welfare Office (CSWO), headed by Felipa Solana, recorded at least 26 passengers, three of them crewmen of the mv Princess of the Stars, who all hailed from Talisay City.

The CSWO got the data from its counterpart in Cebu City that set up an assistance center for the victims’ relatives at the city sports complex.

Cabigas advised the nearest kin of the victims to submit pertinent documents at the CSWO for processing of their financial aid.

As of last Monday, Sun.Star Cebu learned that four relatives already showed up at Solana’s office to formalize their claims.

Last week, the City Council also appropriated P800,000 from the City’s calamity funds as monetary assistance to Talisaynons whose houses in the coastal areas were destroyed by typhoon Frank.

The aid will include the families in the hilly villages that were displaced by landslides and mudflows.

The council has declared the affected barangays under a state of calamity. (GC)
