Thursday, July 03, 2008 Utzurrum: ‘Where are the boys?’ By Chinggay V. Utzurrum The scene
ST. Theresa’s College (STC) is a gift and a blessing as it celebrates its 75th year of existence and presence in the Philippines. Since 1933, STC has been a center for education and loving service to the community. Indeed, 2008 has loomed as a year of thanksgiving and celebration.
Early in the year, STC was already in a joyful mode as it initiated various events. Last Feb. 1 a dinner for cause was held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. It was called Eight Hands, a piano concert featuring four top lady pianists.
Last Feb. 23-24 was the STC Family Day, which had a raffle draw as a highlight. May 20-23 saw a seminar workshop on “Preventive Conservation of Museum Collection” with the theme Museums, Heritage and Conservation.
An activity for June was the book launching of Sr. Ofelia Ybañez ICM, the Songs of the Web of Life. Reflections on word and song, indeed, showcasing her talent
As we begin the third quarter with the theme Go Lead The Way, another book will be launched on July 25, A Diamond Jubilation by Jenara Regis-newman. Cookie, as we all know her, spent many a-sleepless-night on this masterpiece, and it is!
A day awaited by all Theresians, old and young, boys and girls, is the Annual Homecoming day on July 26, a Saturday, which will be obviously X in many ways: Extra-ordinary, Xtra-colorful, Xtra-enduring, Xtra-unforgettable, and all that jazz! We’ll go back to this day, after outlining the year’s events:
Aug. 8 will be the blessing of the Butterfly garden in campus; followed by intramurals on Aug. 28-30; and a spectacular Broadway musical comes your way on Sept. 26-28, as BRAVO unfolds with incomparable theatre director Benjie Diola, at the helm.
St. Theresa of Avila, STC patron, will be remembered with a novena from Oct. 1-14, and in between those days, Oct. 10, is Mother Foundress’ (Sr. Louise De Meester) day. The feast of St. Theresa of Avila is on the 15th.
The inauguration of the leadership institute will be marked on Nov. 7 with a Eucharistic Celebration, followed by another activity on Nov. 22, a diamond lecture forum focus on stewardship and leadership.
Come Christmas season, Fr. Rudy Villanueva will present a dance drama.
Oratorio will on Dec. 11 and 12. To culminate STC’s diamond jubilee, a Eucharistic Celebration will commence the Lighting of the Eternity dinner, and a fitting tribute to the beloved ICM sisters.

Which makes us wonder: in the flurry and frenetic pace of the jubilee, where are the boys? We have in our midst a list dating back to 1939, with a graduate Pablo Ilano II of Gen. Echavez St., and quite a number of chaps from 1939 to 1975; totaling, believe it or not, 1,692 names! In this mind-boggling list, there are a number of Chinese names, probably because there was no Sacred Heart School then. By 1975, STC “phased out” the grade school boys department.
Anyway, here are 19 photos of STC boys whom we want to tap for the diamond jubilee of their school. Boys or men, stand up and be counted, the school needs you.
