More equipment for Air Force: GMA

THE government is set to invite bidders for the multi-billion peso purchase of brand-new helicopters for the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

President Arroyo made this announcement yesterday during the PAF’s 61st Founding Day anniversary celebration held at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base (MBEAB).

Arroyo also said that there will be deliveries of brand-new and sophisticated aircrafts that would replace the old ones.

“This will prevent the Air Force from running out of planes and prevent the pilots from running out of the Air Force,” she said.

“They can fly planes for peace, while the PAF regulars press on with missions to end conflicts,” Arroyo added.

The President also told the soldiers that the government will not only acquire hard assets (aircrafts) but also keep its operating expenses flowing.

“(Defense) Secretary (Gilbert) Teodoro will make sure that your (maintenance and other operating expenses) intended for fuel, lubricants and spare parts is always adequate,” Arroyo said.

She also asked the PAF soldiers “to deliver support, revive hope, (and) ensure peace for a nation that is taking off, and to help rise to the level of First World in 20 years.”

“I call on you: Surge on full power, fly safely and press on with your role to protect our nation,” Arroyo told them.

The President also said that because the government is so appreciative of the work of the PAF and all the state workers, all of them will receive a 10-percent increase of their salaries starting this month.

The PAF celebration was transferred from Villamor Air Base to MBEAB to prevent disruption of the delivery of relief goods for the victims of typhoon Frank and the families of the victims of the sinking of the MV Princess of the Stars.

Yesterday’s celebration was led by Air Force Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog. It was also attended by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. (EOB)
