Chiongbian: To view or not to view
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

TO view or not to view, that is the question. The View Invitational Golf Tournament tees off today through Sunday at Alta Vista GC, and in search to validate that question, we ask if the golfers really notice the view of Cebu when they play golf at Alta Vista.

My thought on that is yes, you do see the beautiful panorama of the two cities, the Cebu channel, SRP and Mactan but most likely, you will only notice this view on the 9th and 14th holes because you need the view to line up your shot. And if you’re merely looking at the view, you must be playing bad and need to look somewhere else to forget your bad shots and lousy score.

The View Invitational is the signature golf tournament of Alta Vista and is always a good tournament to join. Everything is run well and the prizes are good. This time they even lowered the registration fee, to the delight of the golfers and sold out all the slots in a hurry, and in short notice.

Let us hope for more lowered registration fees like this, a welcome relief to everything going up. And never mind the gasoline price that goes up every week like the temperature inside the volcano that is ready to erupt.

Hey, how big is David Chan? Yes, he’s real BIG because he’s been running the Business In Golf tournament of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce for three years and just finished a very successful tournament last week at Cebu Country Club. I heard he wants to lie low but if I were you guys, I wouldn’t let him take that break.

Who is bigger than big, Tess Chan of course. And biggest big, is CCCI pres. Dr. Edward Gaisano, who is also a Rotarian. Two worthy and dedicated Rotarians receiving Cebu Chamber awards this year were Nestor Archival and Philip Tan.

Fresh from organizing the second Y101 Corporate Cup golf tournament at Cebu Country Club two weeks ago, Joseph Stevens took the lowest gross honors at the CCC June monthly medal tournament last Saturday with a one-under par of 71.

Stevens’ Y101 team was in contention for the championship in the second Y101 Cup with his teammate cousin Bruce C., who showed up on the second day and articulated why he was there that fateful day. Why, he said, “way uwan uwan man mi” and so typhoon Frank took care of that and made the ultimate decision.

Congrats to the rest of the CCC June monthly medal winners Evans Tumaliwan (net66), who won the class A title with Raymond Garcia (net67) as the runnerup. The Class B title went to Jack Huang (net68), while his runnerup was David Lu (net69). Alvin Tan (net67) was class C champion, while Hiroshi Horii (net67) was runnerup.

Rudy Tiu (net 68) was class D champion, while Koji Hosogaya (net72) was the runnerup. Senior’s division crown went to Francis Zosa (net68) and Joseph Yukayguan. Guest winners were Danny Alcoseba and Terje Spetaas.

The month of July is the changing of the guards for the Rotary Clubs and this week is the virgin flight for the all-new club presidents to run and lead their clubs for the first time. The Rotary Clubs of Cebu (the mother club), Cebu West, Cebu Gloria Maris, Cebu East and Cebu Port Center already had their induction of officers last month and all the rest will be having theirs this month.

Our new Rotary Club of Cebu president Dr. Teodoro Gonzales Jr., is taking over from John Domingo and will preside his first meeting today at the Marriott Hotel.

His first act is to induct prominent Cebu personality Jesus “Jess” Alcordo as the newest member of the second oldest Rotary Club in the Philippines, 76 years and counting.

GOLF TIP. Take a clean and simple motion in order to get good and consistent results with your chipping. Don’t make any extra moves that will complicate your swing or that motion. Simply take a sweeping motion back and through, in one flowing movement from the backswing through the ball. Remember that the hands must lead the club to the ball on a sharp and descending blow.

At impact, focus on nipping the ball off the turf so that the ball flies off the clubface immediately. If you are used to hitting the turf first then you are hitting it fat and must therefore hit it harder to give you the distance you need. This leads to inconsistent shots.
