Friday, July 04, 2008 Doce Pares introduces new sport
STICK fighters are yet to outgrow with the garrote. Now they are venturing in knife fighting
The reason, knife fighting is one of the main disciplines in the Doce Pares multi-style system and they want it tested in a sport.
“Knife fighting will now officially become a sport,” said Doce Pares president and grandmaster Dionisio Cañete.
The promotion of knife fighting as a sport was due to the insistent demand of practitioners, who want to test their skills in a competition.
A 10-point must system per round will be in effect like in Eskrima. A disarm will count as a knockdown. Three successive disarms will be equivalent to a technical knock out or disqualification.
To score and win a round, a fighter needs to hit opponents as many times as possible in a three-minute round, while showing his defensive skills to score a 10. The fighter with the most number of points after three rounds will be declared the winner.
Along with knife fighting, the long stick fighting will also take place in the second Doce Pares world meet, while single and double stick fighting will remain the main offering of the tournament. (PR)
