Sunday, July 06, 2008 73-year-old masseur dies after falling off a dam in Talisay
A MAN was killed after he slid and fell into a dam at Mananga River in the mountain barangay of Jaclupan, Talisay City yesterday.
Marcelo Basera, 73, was reportedly casting a fishnet in the area around 6 a.m. when the accident happened, said PO1 Jundave David of the Talisay City Police Homicide Section.
Basera, also a known local masseur, lived near the Mananga riverbank.
Catching freshwater fish at a dam of the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD), a local water utility firm, was reportedly his morning hobby, David said.
The MCWD-owned weir dam and pumping stations at the Mananga River supply water to Cebu City and other Metro Cebu towns.
David believed that the old man succumbed to severe injuries in the head and body after falling down the rocky bottom of the river.
Water current swept the victim’s body some 40 meters from the spot where he fell, David said. It would have been carried farther if Basera’s nylon fishnet hadn’t got caught in a rock.
It was already past 9 a.m. when residents plucked Basera’s body from the river and brought it to a funeral home in Barangay Bulacao. (GC)
