Tuesday, July 08, 2008 Freedom to move By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano
THIS is the best news so far that I have heard in recent weeks.
Hearing about a Pinoy artist “exhibiting and exploring the art scene abroad” is quite an achievement especially during these times of soaring travel fares.
We’re talking about the painter Celso Pepito, who recently returned from an exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. Like him, other artists should venture far and wide, discover and expand new horizons and bring Cebuano art to the world.
Pepito flew to Malaysia as an invited artist to participate in an art exhibit “Kalayaan 2008” celebrating the 110th anniversary of Philippine Independence. The show was held at the Galeri Dunia Seni Lukis in collaboration with the Embassy of the Philippines in Malaysia and Art Malaysia. With Pepito were four other Filipino artists, namely, Noel Pascual, Nell Campos, Lillian Tan and Aida Sze.
Pascual and Campos are painters from the national capital while Tan and Sze are currently based in Malaysia.
Convening the show were the Filipino Ambassador in Malaysia Victoriano Lecaros and the gallery owner Liew Kian Yap.
Gracing the exhibit opening last June 12 as guest of honor was Malaysia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim who before joining the foreign service was an arts and culture minister.
