Speak out: Dress code
By Illo V. Cardosa
Malabuyoc, Cebu

THE church dress code was adopted a long time ago. But it seems that this is being disregarded and frowned upon by young women, as well as some adults who consider themselves living in the “hi-tech” era. Only the elderly and hard-core parishioners religiously heed the mandate of the church.

The dress code was adopted mainly for the purpose of modesty and simplicity.

Let us just remind ourselves that this is our spiritual duty and obligation in going to the house of worship. As devout parishioners, we should remember that, putting pride aside, the church is a sacred place and not for showing off the best dress in town.

Women today are prone to wear dresses of the latest style that do not conform to the dress code standards. Inappropriate dress should not be worn inside the church as this is not in consonant with ethical practices. It is blasphemous to the ONE we are praying to.

Following the dress code does not mean curtailment our freedom of choice.

Doing otherwise will only defeat our purpose of hearing the Holy Mass.

I can still remember the late monsignor Manuel Salvador who would not give Holy Communion to those who wore sleeveless or mini skirts. Nevertheless, he was lauded and well-loved by parishioners.

At this juncture, I just pray and hope that somehow we shall learn to keep the sanctity and sacredness of our church by obeying the dress code.
