Thursday, July 10, 2008 Ng: Photo contest for Mandaue Business Month By Wilson Ng Wired Desktop
I AM now involved in the preparations for the Mandaue Business Month 2008 in August. The event, which coincides with the Mandaue City Charter Day, is hosted by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Mandaue is an industrial city and, in many ways, different from Cebu City. Thus, we are trying to work out some events that would be different from those held during the Cebu Business Month, which I was involved in.
One of the events that we will organize is virtual as it will be almost wholly on the web. This is the “Sugbu Kini Photo/Video Tag Contest.”
With the onset of digital photography, we no longer have to buy film and pay for developing. This has increased interest in photography and video. Due to a heightened interest in photography, there are probably millions of photos of Cebu in thousands of websites and computers worldwide. Scores of them are uploaded to social networking sites like Facebook or Friendster, and more are put into public photo libraries like Picasa, Photobucket or Flickr. Millions of videos are in YouTube, and other sites.
However, many photos are not properly labeled, tagged or uploaded to the Internet.
We figured that if we can just make people upload and properly label photos on to the Internet, it would be easier for Internet surfers worldwide to find pictures of Cebu.
This is the reason we are launching the contest. Those who can find photos of different towns and cities in Cebu on the Internet can join as well; they just have to note the URL where the photos are posted and submit their labels or keywords to our web-site.
Those who will send us photos will be able to participate in a raffle. Each photo will earn one raffle entry. The contest is open from July 12 to August 20, 2008. The website, www.ccebu.net/mandaue, is currently in the works.
Winning entries will be evaluated based on: whether the picture is really of Cebu, depicts life in any town or city in Cebu and/or its cultural heritage, and if the description or keyword successfully describes the picture.
Prizes, totalling P20,000, await winners.
