Cesafi offers preview for new season

THOSE who follow the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) might wonder what is in store for basketball lovers for the coming eighth season of the city’s premier basketball league.

This will be answered when the Cesafi’s upper-ranked teams see action today and tomorrow as a sidelight to the 6th Asian Universities Basketball Championship at the Cebu Coliseum.

Fans will have a taste of the coming Cesafi season when the University of Cebu Webmasters, University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and University of San Carlos Warriors showcase their new lineup and what they have been doing in the off season.

“We want to give them a chance to size each other up before the Cesafi starts. We also want slacken the tight scheduling that we have so that our players, especially those from abroad, could take a breather as they might play in the championship on Saturday,” said organizer Lorenzo Sy.

Secret weapons

The UC Webmasters take on USC Warriors at 4 p.m. today before China and Korea take on each other. UC will be anchored by its 6-foot-7 stalwart Junmar Fajardo, while USC is banking on a lonely Enrico Llanto today.

Llanto, a back-to-back MVP of the Cesafi, will no longer have Niño Ramirez with them as Ramirez has exhausted his playing years in the Cesafi. However, USC boasts of a bevy of fresh talents, who will be the team’s secret weapons.

USJ-R on the other hand, who won last summer’s M. Lhuillier League, the La Fortuna Cup and the Partners Cup, will also display its strengthened arsenals when they take on UC tomorrow at the same time.

These three teams, which made it to the top 5 of last year’s Cesafi will get their chance to see action before the regular season starts on Aug. 2 at the Cebu Coliseum. (MCB)
