Friday, July 11, 2008 Farmer dares fishing, drowns
A FARMER who was trying his hand at fishing drowned in a river in a mountain village of Carcar City last Thursday.
Eduardo “Eddie” Sasutana, 46, a farmer from Sitio Pit-os, Barangay Calidngan, Carcar City had a fishing rod with him and was trying to catch fish in the river of Sitio Pit-os at 4 p.m.
As he threw the hook at the water, the hook got stuck in the rocks below.
Sasutana tried to get it but it was so far down that he tried to swim.
It was Barangay Councilor Julie Wapere that went to the Carcar City Police Station to report the incident.
Sasutana did not think the river was deep and could no longer swim to safety.
His relatives told police that the river was about 10-feet deep.
The river reportedly led to the dam of the National Irrigation Administration.
The village of Calidngan is in the mountain some 15 kms. from the city proper, said PO3 Reynaldo Fuentes of the Carcar City Police Station.
Fuentes said many residents tried their luck at fishing in that river, which is reportedly abundant with tilapia.
However, at that time, only Sasutana was fishing by the river.
His wife and relatives brought Sasutana’s body back to their house and decided not to have an autopsy performed. (MEA)
