High school student hurt after multicab loses brakes, flips

TEN high school students and two other companions were wounded after the multicab they were riding lost its brakes and flipped on its side yesterday.

The incident happened at 5 p.m. in Sitio Looc, Barangay Legaspi, Alegria town.

The 10 students were picked from the St. Peter Academy in Alegria town and were on their way back to Malabuyoc town where they all live.

The southbound Suzuki multicab driven by Ritchell Aragon was carrying John Almon Carcueva, 17, Diosary Cardosa, 12, Bebot Carcedo, 13, Donnaville Vildesola, 15, Francis Nieves, 18, Neil Andrew Carcueva, 12, Carl Anthony Iman, 14, Van Tyne Nalo, 15 and Rosemarie Arcullana, 16.

Also with them was Airos Kent Martinez, 20, a nursing graduate.

Insp. Patrocinio Baylosis, Alegria Police chief, said the multicab must have been traveling very fast because after it stopped, it got stuck to the railings along the highway.

Aragon told police that when he applied the brakes, they failed to function.

The multicab skidded, landed on its left side and crashed into the railings.

All of them were taken to the district hospital in Alegria, but John Almon Carcueva was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City because he had more serious injuries in his head.

Aragon was detained at the Alegria Police Station but will be released if the passengers decided not to push through with the case or if the reglamentary period lapses.

The owner of the jeepney has also assured he will take care of the hospital bills. (MEA)
