Saturday, July 12, 2008 GM Torre eyes to get even with Antonio
EUGENE Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster, has only thing in his mind and that is to avenge his loss 10 years ago to his nemesis and fellow GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., in their forthcoming six-game series dubbed “QC Chess Road Show” which unfurls on July 21 at the Quezon City Hall at the Gateway Mall of the Araneta Center.
“I really prepared for his and I hope I can get even with Joey,” said Torre, whose only loss in a one-on-one showdown in a local soil was against Antonio during their first ever face-off in 1998.
“I’m in good shape and my stamina is okey,” said Torre, who aside from playing in the internet to prepare for event, also goes to the gym and plays tennis and golf.
On the other hand, Antonio, the many-time national open champion said “I respect Eugene, it’s really hard to prepare against him and I expect that he will come up with a lot of new moves. I also hope that with our match, we can contribute to the education of the young players.”
QC Majority Floor Leader Ariel Inton of the 4th district hopes that by coming up with the Torre-Antonio II duel dubbed more Filipinos will be encouraged to take up the sport.
Inton appeared in yesterday’s Scoop sa Kamayan Forum at the Padre Faura branch and said that other than sport, the city hopes to showcase its tourism aspect by holding the rest of the games in selected significant places within Quezon City. (PR)
