Monday, July 14, 2008 Honoridez carries Cebu’s medal hopes in ICG
JEAN Philippe Jawad-Honoridez is the only Cebuano left standing in the International Children’s games after his teammates lost their respective matches in the second day of the games in San Francisco, California yesterday.
Honoridez will have fate to thank for his advancing to the championship bracket of the table tennis event.
Honoridez won one match via default after his opponent from Pakistan, Moeez Ali did not show up. This was all Honoridez of Colegio del Sto. Niño needed in order to advance in the competition.
The top two in each group will move to the championship bracket, while the rest will play in the consolation bracket.
After his win by default, Honoridez then faced USA’s Tomas Fuentes-Afflic but lost, 3-11, 4-11, 5-11. But thanks to his win over the Pakistani, Honoridez will live to see another day at the competition.
His teammate Dannel Jay Tormis of University of Cebu was not as lucky as he lost to Oba Kizito of Cote D’ Ivore three sets to one, 6-11, 8-11, 11-8, 6-11 and bowed to Thailand’s Yodsawat Paisiviroj, 7-11, 2-11, 12-10, 6-11, which formalized his exit from the competition.
In the lawn tennis competition, where the Cebuano bets will have to contend in the consolation round, Jacob Lagman is set to face New Delhi’s Tarun Chopra, while Ariel Torion will face Ahmed Jasim of Panama in the Boys 14 division. (MCB)
