Wednesday, July 16, 2008 Homebound man saved by the belt
IF not for his belt, a man who was on his way home wouldn’t have survived a shooting carried out by two men on a motorcycle in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City last night.
Nolito Sevilla of Barangay Basak San Nicolas was standing on the stepboard of the Inayawan-bound jeepney he was taking on his way home when he noticed the suspects tailing the vehicle.
Upon reaching Mambaling, he saw one of the suspects take out a gun, prompting him to jump off the jeepney and run toward Sitio Kamansi.
When Sevilla saw that the suspects were still chasing him, he went inside a house in the area, hoping that the two men won’t follow him anymore.
The suspects, however, also went inside and upon seeing Sevilla, dragged him outside where they shot him three times.
Fortunately for Sevilla, two of the bullets hit his Alice belt (a military gear made of nylon) instead.
The third shot hit his right thumb, while his middle finger was broken. He also suffered a graze wound in his ear.
The suspects immediately fled.
Policemen from the San Nicolas Police Station recovered an empty slug and two empty shells of a .45 pistol.
SPO1 Rene Sebes, one of the responding officers, told Sun.Star Cebu last night that Sevilla had been arrested over a family dispute and faced a complaint for attempted rape.
Sebes, however, said they are not aware if Sevilla had spent time in jail.
Sevilla told policemen when he had the incident recorded in the police blotter that he has since reformed and now works as a parking attendant in Fuente Osmeña.
The victim also said he could not think of any motive for the shooting and that he failed to recognize his attackers, saying the area where he was shot was dark.
Sevilla’s attack came barely four days after three men were shot in separate incidents last Friday.
Unlike Sevilla, the three victims in Friday’s incidents died. (RCT)
