CEIV wins Liga

CEBU Engineering and Industrial Ventures (CEIV) blew hot and cold before toppling top seed Team Monterroyo, 52-47, to bag the championship of the Mondays Liga 2008.

CEIV leaned on the hot hands of Edmund Odulio in the first quarter to control the tempo of the game, taking an 18-7 lead going into the second period. Roy Aznar then took charge to take CEIV to a 14-point lead, 33-19, at halftime.

Team Monterroyo, however, had other things in mind as it staged a furious rally that allowed them to bounce back in the third quarter behind the efforts of Bong Paculaba, who slashed the lead to just eight, 31-39 going into the final period.

Team Monterroyo’s steady rally continued in the fourth quarter and managed to control the tempo of the game with Eric Nepomuceno at the helm.

The team cut CEIV’s lead further down to only three, 47-50, with 22 seconds left in the game. However, their attempts to send the game to overtime became futile as they started shooting blanks from the three-point arc.

Monterroyo had to force fouls and CEIV relied on the free throws of Odulio to ice the game.

Odulio, who was later named MVP of the tournament, led the scorers with 15 points. Atan de Leon’s added 11 markers.

Team-C on the other hand, trashed LCP Garments, 91-68 to win the third place diadem.

The Mondays Liga is the annual tournament of Club Monday, a basketball club that was founded in 1995. (PR)
