Jail managers recognize Lapu, Talisay cities

MAYORS Arturo Radaza of Lapu-Lapu and Socrates Fernandez of Talisay City were recognized by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) along with six other mayors in the country for their “awesome regard” for the bureau’s advancement.

The BJMP picked Talisay’s jail in Barangay Maghaway as the City Jail of the Year for 2008, besting even Cebu City’s modern facility in Barangay Kalunasan.

The cities of Lapu-Lapu and Talisay received special awards for the livelihood projects they have provided to inmates and the vehicles for BJMP personnel. They received the awards during the BJMP’s 27th anniversary celebration held at Gazebo Royale in Quezon City last July 22.

Also recognized were Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices, the Lebumfacil-Santa Ana Foundation in Toledo City and five other city mayors.

“What they achieved also contributes to the accomplishments of the bureau. Through these men and women we accomplished much. But mind you, there are still others in the field who escaped our notice, those who worked silently and diligently,” Jail Director Rosendo Dial said in a message, a copy of which was given to Sun.Star Cebu.

Advice

Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Damian Gomez, who chairs the finance and tourism committees, represented Mayor Radaza in the awarding rites.

Aside from the vehicles and livelihood project, Lapu-Lapu is spending for a quarterly seminar inside the jail on the effects of illegal drugs.

“We really did not expect to be recognized because our mere intention in helping the BJMP is to rehabilitate our inmates so they will be accepted again in society,” Gomez said. (AIV)
