All 6 passengers survive after banca capsizes

ANOTHER banca capsized off Moalboal town Friday, leaving six persons stranded.

The group was on their way to the neighboring province of Oriental Negros from the town of Ronda when the boat they were on hit a floating log at past 7 p.m.

This caused the boat to capsize off Sitio Basdaku, Barangay Saavedra, Moalboal town.

One of the passengers sent a text message to Ryan Abrenica, an employee of Club Serena, Moalboal, who in turn proceeded to the town’s police station to seek help.

This led Moalboal Police Chief Rolly Lauron and PO3 Remberto Empenado to contact the different resorts in the town to ask them if they could borrow a boat for search and rescue operations.

The report stated that Club Serena and Ravenala resorts and a resident in the area lent their boats to the police. Police then scoured the Tañon Strait in search of the passengers.

At 11 p.m., the six passengers were located and transferred to two rescue boats that came from Oriental Negros. None of the six passengers were hurt. Police, though, were unable to get their names.

Earlier that day, six passengers from Palompon, Leyte were stranded for nine hours after the banca they were on capsized off Barangay Esperanza, San Francisco in Camotes Island.

Big waves reportedly caused the boat to capsize.

The group was headed for Lapu-Lapu City to pick up a body that was to be buried in Palompon.

Meanwhile, a man who decided to take a swim after a drinking spree drowned in Barangay Kawit, Medellin, Cebu last Thursday.

Ronron Bultron went swimming after a few rounds of drinks, but drowned, his uncle Teofilo Auman of Bantayan told the police. (MEA)
