Sunday, July 20, 2008 P450T in aid for Zone Kamunggay
THE Mandaue City Council has placed Zone Kamunggay in Barangay Paknaan under a state of calamity, and allocated P450,000 in relief assistance to victims of the July 14 fire.
The barangay has already declared the place a calamity area, which came before the City Disaster Coordinating Council requested the City Council last July 15 to tap the City’s calamity fund to help the victims.
Per request by the CDCC, which Mayor Jonas Cortes heads, P8,000 will be given to each of the 46 affected house owners, and P3,000 for each of the 13 house renters; P20,000 for toiletries; and P23,000 for miscellaneous and operational expenses.
Origin
City Fire Marshal Oscar Mayol reported that the fire originated from the house of a certain Irenea Caruana around 2:30 p.m., and immediately spread to neighboring houses, which were made of light materials.
Responding firemen from Mandaue and the neighboring cities, Filipino-Chinese and Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation volunteers, Philippine Air Force members, and Euratex Foam firefighters controlled the blaze in 23 minutes.
Investigation
Mayol said they are still investigating the cause of the blaze, whose last ember they doused in two hours and 45 minutes.
No one was reported killed or hurt during the incident.
Paknaan barangay officials led by Oscar Mendoza assisted City Social Welfare Office Head Violeta Cavada in identifying the victims during the giving of initial relief assistance that Cortes spearheaded. (OCP)
