Sunday, July 20, 2008 Banal's foe to hold public workout today
BOXING fans will have a first hand look at the Filipino heroes’ antagonists as the visitors will hold a public workout today at the SM City Cebu Activity Center.
Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion and Carlos Melo will be joining ALA Boys AJ “Bazooka” Banal, Milan “Milenyo” Melindo, Michael Domingo and James Bacon as they showcase their boxing talent in front of Cebuano fight fans.
The contingent of Concepcion will be arriving today at 9 a.m., while Melo’s group will be in Cebu at 2 p.m.
Vacant title
Concepcion will be contending for the vacant World Boxing Association super flyweight crown, which was vacated by Alexander Muñoz, against homegrown talent Banal, while Melo will be up against the speedy Milendo for the vacant WBA Intercontinental minimum weight belt on July 26 at the Cebu Coliseum.
Meanwhile, Domingo’s opponent for the vacant World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight belt, Rivo Rengkung, will be arriving on July 22 along with international matchmaker Sampson Leckowicz.
Concepcion will also have a public workout on that same day at the ALA Gym at the Banilad Town Center.
On the other hand, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president Eric Gomez and WBO Asia-Pacific Chairman Leon Panoncillo will also arrive on July 23 for the “Laban na Banal: Panahon Na” fight card.
The card will also have Bacon against Thai fighter Vacharakit Senakarn, a special ladies bout between American Brenda Shaylor and Reynalyn Consejo Jacob and a three-round exhibition fight between WBA President Gilberto Mendoza and former Philippine champion Ernie Alesna. (EKA)
