Wednesday, July 23, 2008 City bares plan to expand IT school project
IN LINE with its vision to “leapfrog” into the digital age, the City Government of Lapu-Lapu will strengthen its computerization project and expand its computer literacy program to include elementary schools.
“We dreamed of making Lapu-Lapu City the Asian version of Silicon Valley,” said Mayor Arturo Radaza in a speech last Monday night when the City Government hosted a recognition night for its top taxpayers.
To do this, Radaza said the City will first develop the human resources in the area by urging the local school board to expand local government’s computer literacy project.
The City is also studying the expansion of its vocational-technological program to be included in the City College.
“In parallel, I am inviting computer schools and colleges to put up campuses in the city to better serve our community so that we will achieve our vision of a city that will have a computer savvy generation,” the mayor said.
At present, 470 computer work stations have been distributed to different barangays to be used by high school students.
Radaza also identified the Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project as the site where the City will put up its version of the Silicon Valley.
Although the project is still in its planning stage, Radaza said he will pursue the undertaking since most schoolchildren are eager to learn.
Aside from information and communication technology, Radaza also identified tourism as a major growth driver for the city.
With this, the City Government will be rolling out an intensified tourism campaign through a program dubbed, “the Sunny Side of Mactan.” But details retailed to the program are still being finalized. (DME)
