Cebu teams all set for POF qualifiers today

THE two Cebu teams, Cebu City and Cebu Province, are geared up and ready to compete today with the best teams in the Visayas region in the 16-under category of the 2008 Philippine Olympic Festival (POF) Visayas Qualifying Games at the Siliman University football grounds in Dumaguete.

Both teams, which left Cebu City yesterday, will see action today in the opening of the 2008 POF Qualifying Games, but what teams they are up against is still uncertain because the schedule was still unavailable as of press time. They will be up against Dumaguete, Bacolod and the football powerhouse Iloilo.

Representatives

Team Cebu City, represented by Paref-Springdale, has beefed up its squad with the addition of Cebu International School players Cameron Booth, Emilio Cunningham, Emmanuel Cunningham and Keith Bruce; Sacred Heart School of Jesuits’ (SHS-J) Carl Arcenas; Center for International Education’s Jules Villahermosa and three players from the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation.

After the departure of rugged defender TJ Mateo and goalkeeper Paulo Pascual, Coah Mario Ceniza is handing over the leadership burden on senior players Evan James Mendoza and Booth.

Teams

Meantime, Cebu Province, comprised mostly of Abellana National School (ANS)-Pomeroy players and handled by Coach Francis Ramirez, reinforced their team with University of Cebu goalkeeper Michael Fernadez, SHS-J midfielder Don Derrick Ramos, mid-fielder Reymar Racoma of Don Bosco Boys Home and FC Inter Cebu forward Jeolito Lucanas.

ANS-Pomeroy earned its right to represent Cebu after winning the 8th Inter Club Football Cup while Paref-Springdale was a runner-up in this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

Last year’s winner in the POF National Championships was Glenn Ramos’ Don Bosco Technology Center which defeated the highly skilled Iloilo team 1-0. (EKA)
