Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Sports scribes support Skins for Heart
THE Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) is giving its support to the “Y101 Skins for Heart” golf event set this Saturday at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club in Pardo, this city.
The SAC members decided to support the event, which is meant to raise funds for the victims of typhoon Frank as their way of contributing to the community.
The Skins for Heart will feature four Filipino professional golfers, who each made a mark in various stages of their careers.
Joseph Stevens, vice president for operations of Y101 FM, said that Gerald Rosales, Gerard Cantada, Marlon Dizon, and Roger Retuerto have confirmed to join the 18-hole event, which is dubbed as the first of its kind in the country.
“This time they play for charity,” Stevens said.
“Skins” is a format of golf competition where a certain prize is put at stake on each hole. If a player wins a particular hole, he wins the skin or the prize at stake, but if there is a tie, the prize is carried over to the next hole.
Gratitude
Martha Tuason, CEO of Y101 FM, expressed her thanks to the officers and management of Alta Vista for the support given to this project.
She said, “We’re happy we found a partner in Alta Vista for this project that has drawn a lot of interest from our listeners here and abroad, who would like to help the victims of the recent typhoon.”
Among those that have immediately signified intention to support this project are Armscor, ICTSI, the First Gentleman Foundation, San Sebastian, LBC, Philips, and Nissan.
Also giving their support to the event are Dos Mestizos, Petron, Loft, and Graphic Star.
Tuason said that more sponsors are expected to confirm their support before the event.
Prepared
She also said that Y101 FM has prepared some giveaways for the first 50 junior golfers, who will be watching the skins game.
Winners of Miss Cebu will also be at the golfers’ lounge of AVGCC to man the table accepting donations for the typhoon victims. Those who can’t go to Alta Vista can also hand over their donations at Y101 located at the 2nd floor of the Gaisano Country Mall.
Rosales, brother of LPGA pro, Jennifer, plays in the Asian Tour.
Cantada was a top junior golfer before he turned pro while Dizon was also a top amateur before becoming a professional.
Retuerto, the most experienced in the foursome, is best known as the coach of the national golf team. (Pooled report)
