Math teacher receives honor

ABOUT 20 University of the Philippines Visayas Cebu High School (UPVCHS) alumni from class 1983 and UPVCHS faculty and students held the first-ever Teofilo B. Lutao Inter-High School Math Quiz Bowl at the UP Visayas Cebu College Conference Hall recently.

The contest was held in honor of former UPVCHS math professor Teofilo B. Lutao, whom the batch considered their best math teacher.

Towards the end of the contest, the class of 1983 also formally turned over to the high school their donation of two Elmo
Digital Visual Presenters, two sets of desktop computers and two computer printers.

In her tribute to Lutao, class valedictorian Angelique Josephine Alvarez-Bender recalled some of her batch’s fondest memories with Lutao, whom she called a “legend.”

“He taught us only to be the best, unwavering, (with) high-standards, to solve the equation in life—any equation in life—without fear and hesitation. This math quiz is in his honor,” said Alvarez-Bender, who was also the quiz master.

16 teams

The competition drew 16 teams of senior students from different public and private high schools in Cebu.

The contest consisted of three 10-question rounds on high school math topics, like number theory, geometry, algebra and basic statistics.

The Sacred Heart School-Jesuits team became the grand champion and went home P8,000.

Bethany Christian School team came in second and was awarded P6,500.

The third-place winner was the team from Sisters of Mary Boys Town, which went home with P4,000.

All winners also received medals, gift checks from Informatics Computer Institute, certificates and a trophy for the school.

Their coaches also received cash gifts and Informatics gift checks.
