Barrita: Speed reading
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

A Sun.Star Cebu report said Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña taught speed reading to a class of college students at the University of Cebu. I’m amazed he still found time to teach speed reading while still trying to sell the South Road Properties (SRP). The mayor is really thinking of the future.

***

Speed reading may be good for students and all those who may want to read the mountain of literary works produced by thousands of authors. We now know Mayor Osmeña is an expert in speed reading. But this skill is of little help in selling the SRP.

***

I read slowly but I hope one day I will learn speed reading too for there are many books I want to read. But American actor and director Woody Allen said he took a speed reading course and read ‘War and Peace’ in twenty minutes. He learned, “It involves Russia.”

***

Really, I hope Mayor Osmeña’s skill in speed reading will once again arouse the interest of our students in reading instead of just watching TV and surfing the Internet. Maybe he will also revive our public libraries and the libraries in our public schools.

The Central Visayas Regional Development Council has opposed Lapu-Lapu City’s ambitious P10-billion reclamation project where Mayor Arturo Radaza hopes to establish his city’s own version of “Silicon Valley.”

Maybe regional economic planners think his city has achieved so much and earned more honors than the rest of the cities in Cebu and the region. Mayor Radaza’s plans are put on hold as of now. But he can still purchase computers and silicon implants.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, in her recent visit to Cebu, ordered the Maritime Industry Authority to conduct a re-audit of Sulpicio Lines’ vessels. If they are found safe, they may be allowed to resume operations. Let them sail, but tell passengers to put on their life vests.
