Sunday, July 27, 2008 Gaining Super Powers By Andy Reynes USJ-R Masscom Intern
SUPERHEROES are beings with amazing abilities that make saving the world easy. They can fly, walk through walls, read minds, become invulnerable and sometimes have the power to become invisible.
Superman, the Flash, Spiderman, Professor X, The Hulk, and the Fantastic Four are just some of the names of the super beings with amazing powers. But aren’t there superheroes who save the world on a daily basis with just their minds and skills, without any amazing powers? Yes there are.
There are some superheroes who are just normal people and become heroes through hard work, intense training and never forgetting to eat their fruit and vegetables. Anyone can work hard and anyone can train their body and mind. But if you want to become a great detective like Batman, gain sharp eyesight like Green Arrow, be as agile as Robin, or even invent gadgets to help in your crusade for good like Ant Man, you have to eat healthy and nutritious food.
To gain the power of a sharp mind, a very impressive memory and immense observation abilities, you should eat lettuce, spinach, broccoli, squash and sweet potatoes or anything with Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps strengthen our mental functions.
With a great mind you need a strong body. To protect your body from diseases and give you tons of energy, orange and green fruits and veggies are the proper diet. Citrus fruit such as oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines contain phytochemicals, which are only found in fruits and help your body to fight off diseases to promote good health. Green leafy vegetables such as collard greens, kale and Romaine lettuce should be eaten everyday. Researchers suggest the more veggies you eat, the healthier you become.
Also, you must have clear eyesight to be able to tell what is wrong from what is right. Carrots, and other yellow or orange vegetables, are packed with beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in our bodies. Vitamin A promotes healthy eyesight, especially at night, and is vital to preventing night blindness.
Different fruits and vegetables help your body in different ways. You can ask your parents or your favorite doctor to help you in choosing what to eat to gain your favorite power. You could even eat different healthy and nutritious foods at the same time to get multiple powers.
You don’t have to be bitten by radio active insects, get hit by something nuclear or look for alien technology to gain powers. You can just open your fridge and look for your favorite vegetable. Ask mom to prepare a burger with lots of lettuce, or even start a “chop suey night” for your family.
Remember, “with great power, comes great responsibility” and eating right is your duty to keep yourself in shape.
