3 suspects stab ex-con dead in barangay benefit dance

AN ex-convict was stabbed dead by three men for refusing them entry to a benefit dance in Phase 3, Sitio Kadasig, Barangay Tisa, Cebu City.

Floro Embalsado La-piña, 45, died from 11 wounds in the chest and neck.

Described by neighbors as having already “renewed” his life and mended his ways, he served as one of the volunteers who kept the activity in order.

SPO1 Jeffrey Diola, who resides in the barangay, arrested one of the three suspects, and was told that the victim did not allow them to get inside the venue.

The three were already intoxicated and Lapiña was wary that they might only create trouble.

Attacker

Diola identified one attacker as Charlemagne B. Ompong, 22, who was arrested at the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) yesterday.

Homicide investigators are still trying to know the names of Ompong’s companions.

Initial investigation showed that the incident happened at 2 a.m., while Lapiña and his cousin Jimmy were about to go home.

Running

Jimmy reportedly told Lapiña to wait for him along the road while he gets his motorcycle that was parked nearby.

When Jimmy came back with the motorcycle, he saw Lapina already sprawled on the road and with several stabwounds; he also noticed at least three men running away.

In a follow up, investigators learned of Ompong, who was being treated at the CCMC for stabwounds in the left hand and right leg.

Ompong claimed he was attacked by Lapiña and that he merely defended himself.

He, however, did not cooperate and refused to name who were with him during the incident. (JST)
