Council OKs P7M aid

THE Cebu City Council approved last Wednesday a P3-million financial assistance to the Barangay Councilmen League of the Philippines’ (BCLP) local chapter for sports programs in the city’s 80 villages.

It has also authorized the appropriation of another P3 million as the City Government’s counterpart for the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation Inc.’s (Eruf) project, and a P1-million financial aid to Alay Lakad Inc.

The Alay Lakad will use the amount to fund its skills training for out-of-school youth, and as educational assistance to high school and college scholars.

In his resolution, Councilor Eduardo Rama Jr. said the P3- million appropriation is for the 2008 Cebu City Emergency Medical Services, which is a joint project of Eruf and the City Government.

The project includes emergency call center operations, alarm and emergency call response, ambulance medical services, and medical back-up assistance.

Safety promotions, disaster preparation and control and paramedics’ and volunteers’ continuing education are also part of its program.

Assistance

In a separate resolution, City Councilor Jose Daluz III specified the amount of P3 million in assistance to the BCLP.

The amount, Daluz said, is for the Barangay Sports Program, which is intended to develop and sustain competitive sports activities.

“It is meant to enhance unity, cooperation, competitiveness, sportsman-ship, character development and promote the well-being of each individual and the community at large,” Daluz said.

Sports activities include basketball, boxing, volleyball, softball, chess and dance sports.

Shortly after the current set of officers of the then Liga ng mga Barangay Kagawad sa Pilipinas-Cebu City were elected last February, Mayor Tomas Osmeña promised that the group will be the one to handle the city’s grassroots sports program.

In the memorandum of agreement that the council authorized the mayor to enter into with BCLP, the latter pledged to oversee the sports program, coordinate with the barangay officials, and develop guidelines for its smooth implementation. (LCR)
