Carcel wins national mini Rok race

FAST-rising Cebuano karting star Juan Antonio “Tonyo” Carcel once more stamped his class when he took the top honors or the ROK race in the fourth leg of the National Karting Series held over the weekend in Carmona, Cavite.

Carcel figured dominantly in the race as he registered the fastest lap time and won in all the heats en route to taking the title.

Carcel was only a runner-up in the local karting series in Kartzone two weeks ago against fellow Cebuanos. This time, he was up against racers from other parts of the country. He will be racing in the fifth leg of the national circuit, which will next be held at Enchanted Kingdom.

The national race was held side by side the 2008 Asian Karting Open Championships, where Carcel and sister Kalyka “Kali” Antoni both went home with decent fourth place finishes in their respective divisions. The race was participated by some of Asia’s top go-kart drivers.

In the mini Rok race of the Asian Open, Tonyo took the third runner up diadem behind eventual champion Igor Omura Fraga of Japan, second placer Andy Chang Wing Chung from Macau and third placer Charmongkon Wisutthisen of Thailand.

Tonyo, however, still managed to leave an impression as he registered the best lap time in the pre-final race. Tonyo was going for the third spot until the rain ruined the momentum.

In the cadet 60 division, meanwhile, Kali also finished fourth to perennial champion Christian Gaddi, Gabriel Decasin, Don Brizuela and Basti Esca–lante, who took the top three spots. (MCB)
