Monday, August 04, 2008 3 from Barili face attempted murder charges
THREE persons from Barili are facing two separate charges of attempted murder for incidents that happened last month, one of them during a wake.
Rolando Kamangyan was charged for allegedly stabbing his grandfather with a foot-long bolo last July 26 at a wake in Barangay Giloctog, Barili.
Mauricio Marinog, the victim, submitted a statement that said he was attending the funeral of his elder brother, the suspect’s grandfather.
While there, Kamangyan offered Marinog a glass of tuba, a local alcoholic drink made of coconut sap, but the latter declined.
According to the sworn statement, Kamangyan later put his arms around Marinog, who thought that his grandson was just “hugging and coddling” him.
“While he continued touching my back, I noticed an unusual sensation in my back that I thought was just a skin irritation, but to my surprise I heard somebody yelling that I was bleeding,” read Marinog’s statement.
Marinog believed that the motive behind the attack was a misunderstanding over an heirloom that has yet to be divided among the family.
Marinog’s nephew Anastacio Marinog also filed an affidavit corroborating the complainant’s written statement.
In another attempted murder case filed before the Office of the Cebu Provincial Prosecutor, also involving Barili locals, an octogenarian claimed to have been shot by married couple Ildefonso and Julieta Bringila on July 14, 2008 in Barangay Vito, Barili.
Vivencio Sanchez, 82, was not hit by the two shots that Ildefonso allegedly fired.
Sanchez, in a sworn statement, said that last July 14, he caught two men harvesting coconuts from his property.
He called the attention of the two men, which irked Ildefonso.
The victim claimed that Ildefonso hired the men. After a confrontation, Ildefonso allegedly took out his gun and pointed it at Sanchez. Julieta then urged Ildefonso to shoot Sanchez.
Neither of the two shots that Ildefonso fired hit Sanchez, though.
A businessman also submitted an affidavit supporting Sanchez’s sworn statement. (JGA)
