Capitol founding anniversary fete kicks off

CAPITOL’s weeklong 439th founding anniversary celebration started yesterday.

Cebu Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr., in his speech during the opening ceremonies, said Cebu Province is a small province with huge dreams, and which has edged out other provinces in the country.

Sanchez thanked the Cebu Provincial Board for their cooperation, which he said is crucial for Province’s development.

He called Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia as “madame good governance” for working almost round the clock.

For her part, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia credited the Province’s success to the 44 towns and seven component cities that compose the Province.

“This Province will undergo change from within,” she said.

“We look back to our rich and glorious past with a strong dynamic present. Confidently, with great faith in God and Cebuanos, we look forward to a grand and prosperous future,” the governor said.

Garcia signed an executive order for the promotion of the Green and Wholesome Environment (GWEN), a program that espouses seven principles of sustainable development with environment as its main area of concern.

The program will mobilize partners such as the local government units and other stakeholders “to achieve vibrant, progressive and self-reliant communities.”

Partner

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc (Rafi) will be the Province’s primary partner in implementing the GWEN program.

Roberto “Bobby” Aboitiz said GWEN is the kind of program they had been waiting for.

“This is a great change to confine our skills and look forward and implement our projects for the benefit of Cebuanos,” he said.

Garcia also led the unveiling of the historical marker of the Cebu Provincial Capitol building, assisted by the National Historical Institute.

A photo exhibit entitled “7 Days in Cebu” and an agri-trade fair within the Capitol premises were also opened yesterday.

The Governor’s Cup 2008 and the 4th season of Guv’s Women’s Volleyball Cup were also launched at the Capitol Social Hall. (GMD)
