THE International Boxing Federation (IBF) is singing a new tune and it isn’t music to the ears of Cebu’s ALA boxing stable.
After Z Gorres’ elimator bout with Vic Darchinyan ended in a draw last Feb. 2 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino, Michael Aldeguer of ALA stable agreed to let Darchinyan, who was then ranked higher than Gorres, go on and fight Dimitri Kirilov IBF super flyweight title provided the winner faces the Cebuano in his first title defense.
However, Philboxing.com reported that IBF now wants to have Gorres face Jorge Arce in another eliminator bout with the winner advancing to face Darchinyan.
“We will just wait the letter from IBF and then we will question it. We have to stick to what we have talked about. Why should Gorres go through an eliminator bout when he already fought in one?” ALA promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Superbalita.
However, the report also said Darchinyan can chose to face anyone in the top 15 of the IBF rankings and even Gorres directly. It also stated that should Arce, the No. 5 in the rankings refuse to fight Gorres, IBF will get the next available fighter.
“It doesn’t mean that we’re not open in fighting Arce but it’s not what we had talked about. We have to verify this to the IBF,” said Aldeguer.
If ever the IBF title shot doesn’t pan out for Gorres, Aldeguer said they are looking at another shot at the World Boxing Organization’s super flyweight title, currently owned by Fernando Montiel who is reportedly planning to move up in weight.
“It’s not confirmed yet but if Montiel will vacate his title, then we have a good chance to fight for the vacant title,” said Aldeguer.
Gorres also lost to Montiel in a controversial split decision in his first title shot in 2007 in Cebu. (ML with ESL of Superbalita)
