Wednesday, August 06, 2008 Rerouting to start next week
TRAFFIC in Guada-lupe, Cebu City will be rerouted the whole week next week in an experiment to reduce the number of vehicles using V. Rama Ave. going to the church area from the M. Velez St. intersection.
But it will only be implemented during the morning rush hour, or from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., even though the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) got an approval for a whole-day implementation, said executive officer Arnel Tancinco.
All vehicles, including public utility jeepneys (PUJs), going to Guadalupe are no longer allowed to use V. Rama Ave. from the M. Velez intersection to the L. Bacayo St. junction.
Those coming from the Capitol area traveling M. Velez St. will turn right for Andres Abellana St., left to L. Bacayo, then to V. Rama.
Those coming from N. Bacalso Ave. and traversing V. Rama for Guadalupe will turn right for M. Velez, left for either E. Osmeña St. or Andres Abellana, left to L. Bacayo, then to V. Rama.
Those from Banawa passing through Duterte St. for Guadalupe will travel across to M. Velez and congregate with other vehicles going to either E. Osmeña or Andres Abellana.
One-way
The stretch of road from the L. Bacayo junction to the M. Velez intersection will just be open to one-way traffic from the Guadalupe area.
Tancinco said rerouting will be resorted to because of the growing number of vehicles converging in V. Rama, resulting to traffic gridlock.
“Motorists, drivers, and other road users are advised to follow the traffic signs installed on the re-routing area,” said Supt. Jonathan Abella, Cebu City Police Office traffic division chief.
Motorists and the public are advised to obey traffic signs installed in the area, he said.
Experimental
Last February, the City Council approved the Citom’s request to make permanent the experimental rerouting of 12L PUJs it implemented since August last year.
This was after Tancinco said the rerouting “effectively reduced” the number of vehicles on M. Velez St., specifically at the intersection of V. Rama Ave., in Guadalupe.
The 145 PUJs plying the 12L routes used to travel back to the Cebu Business Park from Punta Princesa using Salvador St., through Banawa, and through the Capitol using Escario St.
Instead of going back to Banawa and to the Capitol area using Duterte and M. Velez St. on its return trip, however, 12L PUJs were rerouted to Tres de Abril St., N. Bacalso, V. Rama, B. Rodriguez St., Gorordo Ave. and Archbishop Reyes Ave. before going back to its original route back to Punta. (RHM)
