Wednesday, August 06, 2008 Barrita: ‘Ego-tripping’ By Eddie O. Barrita Small Bites
CEBU City Mayor Tommy Osmeña used Cebu’s 439th founding anniversary in sniping at Capitol.
He said he doesn’t care if he gets invited or not to the celebration as it will only be used by Gov. Gwen Garcia as an occasion for “ego-tripping.”
He should find egotists are nice because they won’t talk about other people.

Mayor Osmeña said Suroy-Suroy Sugbo, whose poster girl is Gov. Gwen, is a waste of money and a part of the governor’s “ego-tripping.”
Gov. Gwen’s face, he said, also appears in almost all posters of the provincial government’s various projects and programs.
That drew a sharp retort from Capitol consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda: “She is good to look at unlike some gremlins, who continue to attack the Capitol.”

Mayor Osmeña apparently took offense on comments the city is very dark.
“Look at the province,” he said, “the governor will soon be the queen of darkness.”
Well, a friend living in a dark interior section of the city told me the place was so well-lighted his cocks once crowed at sunset, believing dawn has come as the sodium lamps automatically turned on.

Two of the greatest journalists Cebu ever produced are among this year’s eight “Garbo sa Sugbo” awardees.
Sun.Star Cebu and Sun.Star Superbalita [Cebu] editor-in-chief Pachico “Cheking” Seares, Gawad Plaridel Awardee 2008 of the University of the Philippines (UP) System, was chosen for his relentless effort to uphold journalism excellence.
Secretary Cerge Remonde, Director General of the Presidential Management Staff (PMS), was chosen for his achievement in the field of government service.

Last weekend, I visited Dipolog City in Zamboanga del Norte for the first time in my life, with broadcaster Choy Torralba and Globe executive Jerry Yntig.
It was not for a vacation but to attend the burial of Nanay Doring, fellow columnist and commentator Bobby Nalzaro’s beloved mother.
Well, as the Bard said, “All that lives must die,/ Passing through nature to eternity.”
