Monday, August 11, 2008 UV outhustles DBC for 2nd win
AFTER their opening day loss in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball season and after almost losing their second outing, seven-time champion the University of the Visayas Green Lancers have started to lose its mantra of invincibility and is in dire need of a huge comeback.
Yesterday, the got one.
The Green Lancers yesterday won over the league’s former whipping boys, the Don Bosco College Greywolves, 76-66, who managed to take the spot light away from the Lancers even for a while.
UV wanted to impede another humiliating performance and sauntered off to a 16-5 lead. But a grittier and more improved DBC turned the game in their favor taking the lead in the 3rd quarter.
However, UV posted a 12-0 run midway in the fourth quarter behind Harlow Villanil to squash whatever hopes DBC had for an upset as the Lancers were playing without Chris Diputado, who has a knee injury and Phil Mercader.
Greg Slaughter had another monstrous outing and was two blocks short of a triple-double.
The 6-foot-11 Fil-Am scored 22 points, had 12 rebounds and eight blocks. He also had two dunks for their second win in three outings.
Competitive
Meanwhile, in the first game, the University of San Jose – Recoletos Jaguars successfully fended off the energetic Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats in a 72-64 victory.
Luther Justiniani led all scorers of USJ-R with 14 points while he had assistance from Mannie Gabas and Armand Ponce who scored eight apiece.
What was supposed to be a lopsided match turned out to be a competitive one as the Wildcats started the fourth quarter with an 11- 2 run to reduce the Jaguars lead to only eight, 59-52.
USJ-R started the fourth quarter with 55-41 lead.
Both teams traded baskets but CIT was more aggressive and banked on the smothering defense and rugged offense of Ryan Motealto.
Motealto led CIT with 16 points, scoring 10 in the fourth quarter.
With the deficit reduced to two points, 66-64, Justiniani retaliated with a beautifully-executed post up move that increased the Jaguars lead to 68-64.
The Wildcats failed to convert their basket in the other end of the court and the USJ-R defense forced turnovers that were converted to back-to-back points.
In the Juniors category, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation dominated the Don Bosco Technology Center 77-68; the University of the Visayas trampled Cebu Eastern College 99-54; the University of Cebu was victorious against CIT 109-94; and USJR edged University of San Carlos, 89-86.
