THE local art community already knows who is Tito Cuevas. The guy is quite well known in Cebu City as an abstract expressionist painter, but the Manila crowd may not have any idea of what his art is about.
So Cuevas thought it’s high time for him to make a splash in the heart of the nation’s capital. He uproots himself, moves some painting across the seas, and temporarily displaces himself from his home court.
Will that be an advantage or a disadvantage? We’ll just have to wait and see for the resulting figures and reviews when he launches another solo show at the Hiraya Gallery along United Nations Avenue in Ermita, Manila.
The exhibit is entitled “This Place Meant” and will consist of a new collection of abstract paintings on paper.
Through the abstract form, Cuevas’ thoughts try to tackle issues that are common concerns to many people such as displacement, and immersion. His thoughts try to expose ignorance and in many ways looks for answers to what lies beyond or after life and death.
Art has been always difficult to fathom, especially when one communicates in abstract because for anyone to fully or partially discern a painting, one has to think in abstract as well.
